The Portlandian, the Internet's premier source of Tonya News

February 19, 2021 Edition - HAPPY BIRTHDAY EDITION!
(C) 2021 Portland Ice Skating Society

Welcome to the second edition of The Portlandian for 2021, in
which we reveal the answers to our Tonya quiz.

We'd also like to wish a happy 10th birthday to Tonya's son,
Gordon. Because if there's one thing that's even more important
than the Triple Axel in Tonya's life it's got to be her family!

While on the topic of Triple Axels, we came across this site,
which has one of the most complete lists of women who have
performed that feat:

With Triple Axels now becoming increasingly common amongst women
skaters, they aren't considered as newsworthy as they once were,
which means that they often don't get reported in international
or even national media. That's a problem as often the small,
local sites they only get coverage on are in many cases not in
English, which makes keeping a comprehensive list rather

This site not only has a list, but two tables which also feature
links to YouTube clips as well. Table one features those who have
landed the jump in national and international competition:

The second table features those known to have landed the jump in
any circumstances, provided it's backed up by video evidence:

As of the time of writing, the site lists 21 members of the
"Trixel Club":

   Midori Ito (joined 1988/12/15),
   Tonya Harding (joined 1991/02/16),
   Ludmila Nelidina (joined 2002/10/26),
   Yukari Nakano (joined 2002/10/26),
   Mao Asada (joined 2004/12/05),
   Kimmie Meissner (joined 2005/01/15),
   Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (joined 2005/03/26),
   Rika Kihira (joined 2016/09/24),
   Mirai Nagasu (joined 2018/02/12),
   Alysa Liu (joined 2018/06/10),
   Ayaka Hosoda (joined 2018/12/21),
   Sofya Akatyeva (joined 2019/09/05),
   Alena Kostornaia (joined 2019/10/13),
   Young You (joined 2019/10/25),
   Sofya Samodelkina (joined 2019/10/27),
   Hanna Yoshida (joined 2019/11/17),
   Mana Kawabe (joined 2019/11/17),
   Varia Kisel (joined 2019/12/27),
   Anastasia Shabotova (joined 2020/10/17),
   Veronika Zhilina (joined 2020/12/07),
   Yana Astashenkova (joined 2021/02/14).

Dig this graphic for the most Googled figure skaters over the
past 14 years - Tonya's never out of the top 10, and frequently
in the top three!!

Naturally, a lot of this rise is connected to "I, Tonya",
starting in early 2016 when Margot became attached to the project
- but what's interesting is that even before then, Tonya's
usually in the top five. It just goes to show the huge impact
that Tonya has had on skating over the years.

procreate_cartoons - Margot character montage

Zoran (attentionvan) - poster spotted in Vancouver BC. Spelling
is a bit off, but can't disagree with the sentiment.

Omar J Drummond (omarjdrummond)

"Graphite Pencil on A4 card paper. First of 2021 looking
forward to another great year of art from the support of
friends and family. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE."

littlegodivas - ring holders

"A Margot Robbie/Tonya Harding MINI-ME! This was one of my
favourite ring holders that was commissioned for Christmas; I
loved painting all the tiny diamanté’s and sequins on her
costume. And the braid! I think braids might be my favourite
    hairstyle to paint"

mario_zucca (1/7) - a rare artwork of Nancy on her own:

Kelly Doty (kellydotylovessoup) #lickmyassdianeshecandoatriple

"Working on this Tonya Harding painting. Why? Because as a
trashy person i respect and love her brand. I remember
watching the olympics with my Gramma and hearing her complain
about how trashy Tonya was and my naturally defiant nature
drove me to loving her out of pure spite. Now as a full grown
trash person i still love her and I’ve been watching a shit
ton of “I, Tonya” and I’m excited to do this rendition of one
    of her glorious cry-faces."

Make sure you have the sound up for this next one:

"Hey i did this varnish thing on my Tonya Harding tribute
painting. This is what the kids are into these days right??"

joe (artldraw00) - triple axel scene (from the movie)

A couple of LaVonas:

"Movie Frame: I,Tonya. In I, Tonya her mother is looking to
make a shocking discovery, I quite liked the lighting
contrast. The movie has some beautiful shots and this one
stuck out as my favorite frame.

Cari (2k020) - Lillehammer pencil sketch

Shona (_storystellar_) - a Tonya press conference

"It's important to hear different sides of the story to make
    your own judgment"

Katie Grant (wirtless) - Tonya confronts the judges

tori t (otherrealmly) - note, photo 7 is actually Oksana Baiul.

   "tonya harding deserved better"

michael_teoli_music - Meanwhile, Tonya & Nancy the Rock Opera is
feeling the Bern:

Elisa (yilisha_art) - smoking Tonya

"I, Tonya - The brilliant story of a complicated and
    misunderstood skater"

SOULEM (given_soulem), Stuttgart, Germany - movie analysis

noirpivoineillustration (Bordeaux, France) - another 3-axel

ElinaM (elinaxdraws) - broken shoelace

"Some days ago I watched the movie "I, Tonya" and of course I
had to draw Tonya Harding, anyway here's a drawing of one of
the most famous ( idk how to call if maybe iconic ? ) things
that have happend during a performance in the Okympics! Also
tbh that took me way more time than I want to admit :\"

Heather Innova (encyclopediasatannica)

Tillman the pig (who is actually a dog) as Tonya.

And now, as promised, here are the answers to our Tonya Quiz:

1: On the day on which Tonya was born, which one of the following
things also occurred?

      a) a whale was blown up with dynamite
      b) Sharon Tate was murdered
      c) the Watergate break-in took place
      d) "The Partridge Family" debuted on television

Answer: a). Believe it or not, this actually happened. The result
was disastrous, with onlookers being showered with pieces of
flying blubber, one of which destroyed a nearby parked Cadillac.
It was an event so notorious that footage of the explosion would
become one of of the most viewed clips on YouTube:

2: What music did Tonya skate to when she landed the Triple Axel
at the 1991 U.S. Nationals?

      a) "The Passenger" by Siouxsie & The Banshees
      b) "The Passenger" by Iggy Pop
      c) the theme from Batman
      d) the theme from Jurassic Park

Answer: c). Tonya skated to the theme from Tim Burton's 1989
Batman film for her 1991 championship-winning Long Program. The
end credits of "I, Tonya" used the Siouxsie and the Banshees
cover version of Iggy Pop's "The Passenger". Tonya skated to the
Jurassic Park theme for her Long Program in 1994, when she also
won her second national title.

3: What was the name of the low-budget action movie that Tonya
had a bit part in shortly after she was banned from figure

      a) "Breakaway"
      b) "Sharp Edges"
      c) "The Price of Gold"
      d) "One-Eyed Hooker With A Shotgun"

Answer: a). In "Breakaway", Tonya plays a woman whose two-timing
boyfriend's other girlfriend is on the run from the mob with a
large amount of cash. The highlight is a scene where she beats up
a hoodlum and kicks him down a flight of stairs. To date, it has
only been released on DVD in Brazil and Germany, so if you want
to watch it in English you'll have to dust off the VHS machine.
Strangest thing is that it does NOT contain any skating - which
would have been the best thing in the film:

4: Artist Mike Denison once drew a picture showing Tonya & Nancy
as characters from which Stanley Kubrick film?

      a) A Clockwork Orange
      b) 2001: A Space Odyssey
      c) The Shining
      d) Dr. Strangelove

Answer: c). Much as we can easily imagine Tonya & Nancy as Droogs
from "A Clockwork Orange", the artwork actually depicts them as
the twins from "The Shining". Items bearing the image can be
purchased from the THNK1994 Museum in New York.

However, the Tonya documentary "Sharp Edges" did appear on a
theatre marquee with "2001: A Space Odyssey" in 2018.

5: What was the name of the Swedish skating official who examined
Tonya's broken shoelace at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics?

      a) Astrid Lindgren
      b) Britta Lindgren
      c) Christina Lindberg
      d) Greta Thunberg

Answer: b). Britta Lindgren of Sweden was the skating official
who examined Tonya's broken shoelace during her ill-fated Long
Program at the 1994 Winter Olympics. She was later given the
shoelace as a souvenir. Astrid Lindgren was the creator of Pippi
Longstocking, Greta Thunberg is a climate-change activist, and
Christina Lindberg is the star of a 1973 Swedish grindhouse film
about a one-eyed hooker who runs amuck with a shotgun:

6: Ricotta, Scafata and Mascarpone are:

      a) characters from "The Sopranos"
      b) famous opera singers
      c) Italian figure skaters of the 1950s
      d) some of the ingredients in Tonya's prize-winning meal on
         "Worst Cooks"

Answer: d). Tonya won first prize on the "Worst Cooks In America
- Celebrity Edition" show in 2019 with dishes featuring these
ingredients. Ricotta is a type of cheese, scafata is a vegetable
stew, and mascarpone is an ice cream - the latter involving
liquid nitrogen in its preparation.

By the way, Tonya met some cast members of The Sopranos a couple
of years ago at an event - you can find a photo on her Instagram

7: Shortly before the 1994 attack, "I, Tonya" director Craig
Gillespie was also involved in making a TV commercial featuring
Nancy Kerrigan for which company?

      a) Nike
      b) Texaco
      c) Disney
      d) Campbell's Soup

Answer: d). Nancy made a commercial for Campbell's Soup, Reebok
and also featured in a Disney parade. Tonya made a commercial for
Texaco, and Nike donated money towards her legal bills:

8: Which artist released a song about Tonya in December 2017?

      a) Sufjan Stevens
      b) Ed Sheeran
      c) Taylor Swift
      d) Alice Cooper

Answer: a). Sufjan Stevens - in fact, he released two versions.
He offered the song to the "I, Tonya" production, but they didn't
think it fitted in with the overall tone of the film.

9: According to a study by the Portland Ice Skating Society's
Special Duties Section published in "The Portlandian" in November
2019, how many f-words does "I, Tonya" contain?

      a) 61
      b) 129
      c) 173
      d) 269

Answer: b). 129, of which 72 come from Tonya, 28 from Jeff, 24
from LaVona, and 5 from other characters. 61 is the total for
Slap Shot, 173 is for Bad Santa, 269 is for Reservoir Dogs.

10: Which of these songs was NOT used on the soundtrack of "I,

      a) "Goodbye Stranger" by Supertramp
      b) "Sleeping Bag" by ZZ Top
      c) "Romeo & Juliet" by Dire Straits
      d) "Evil Woman" by the Electric Light Orchestra

Answer: d). All of the other songs, along with "Devil Woman" by
Cliff Richard, appear in the film, but not "Evil Woman" by ELO.

11. Which of the following skaters was one of the stunt doubles
for Margot Robbie in "I, Tonya"?

      a) Gracie Gold
      b) Ashley Wagner
      c) Heidi Munger
      d) there were no stunt doubles - Margot did all her own

Answer: c). Although Margot spent many hours practising on ice,
she was nowhere near capable of doing any sophisticated jumps, so
two real skaters, Heidi Munger and Anna Malkova, did the more
difficult skating moves in the film. No suitable skater could be
found who was willing to attempt a triple axel - the version in
the film is a composite of Margot combined with a stunt double
doing a double axel that was extended into a triple using CGI
effects software.

Sarah Kawahara, who was the skating trainer and technical adviser
on the shoot, said of Tonya that "as a technical skater she was
really quite good, and very powerful, and jumps were really high,
and her spins were really fast, and she was always centered". "It
was interesting to bring a new generation to look and examine her
as a skater. The doubles were really amazed at the caliber of her

12: Established in 2015, the THNK1994 museum is located in which
Borough of New York City?

      a) Brooklyn
      b) The Bronx
      c) Manhattan
      d) Staten Island

Answer: a). Originally set up in an apartment hallway, the THNK

premises, but still in Brooklyn.

13: In 2015, Portland artist Brittany Powell created a diorama
based on what Tonya-related event?

      a) the Nancy Kerrigan assault
      b) the 1991 Nationals triple axel
      c) the broken shoelace at Lillehammer
      d) her fight against Paula Jones in "Celebrity Boxing"

Answer: b). The diorama, originally created for a competition
celebrating Oregon-ness, is now on display as part of the
Permanent Collection at the THNK1994 Museum in New York.

14: After his release from prison, what did Nancy Kerrigan hitman
Shane Stant change his name to?

      a) Shane Price
      b) Shane Stone
      c) Brian Shane Griffith
      d) none of the above

Answer: d). Trick question - Shane Stant never changed his name.
He's still Shane Stant. His story was told in the recent
documentary "My Hero, The Hitman", aka "My Hero's Shadow".

15: An incriminating note, allegedly in Tonya's handwriting, was
found in a dumpster outside which location?

      a) The Clackamas Town Center mall
      b) The Dockside Saloon
      c) The Tony Kent Arena
      d) Christine Brennan's house

Answer: b). The Dockside Saloon in Portland. They still make
reference to it on their menus.

16: Tonya made it through to the final of which reality show in

      a) Celebrity Big Brother
      b) Dancing With The Stars
      c) The Masked Singer
      d) Real Housewives of Clackamas County

Answer: b) Tonya and her dancing partner Sasha Farber finished
third in the contest, which included Tonya dancing to Gretchen
Wilson's "Redneck Woman" with a guy dressed in a bear suit:

And by the way, we've got first dibs on the "Real Housewives of
Clackamas County" concept, and if you steal it, we'll sue your
ass off.

17: Two roads named Harding and Kerrigan intersect in which

      a) Portland, Oregon.
      b) Stoneham, Mass.
      c) Copiague, NY.
      d) Lillehammer, Norway.

Answer: c). They can be found in the town of Copiague, on Long
Island, NY. But they're not named after the two skaters - they've
had those names since they were created in the 1920s. Harding
Road is believed to be named after President Warren Harding, but
nobody knows who Kerrigan Road is named after.

18: "Tonya and Nancy: The Rock Opera" played in which American
city last year?

      a) Naples, FL.
      b) Reno, NV.
      c) Huntington, WV.
      d) Phoenix, AZ.

Answer: a) Naples, Florida. It's not (yet) been performed in any
of the other cities, though Tonya has skated in all of them -
Reno in 1997, Huntington in 1999, and Phoenix in 1993.

19: Tonya appeared at a fundraiser for which type of charitable
cause in Eugene, Oregon in 2019?

      a) muscular dystrophy
      b) 9/11 victims
      c) domestic violence
      d) a children's hospital

Answer: c). Tonya appeared at an event to raise money for
domestic violence victims at the University of Oregon in Eugene
in March 2019. But she's also done fundraising for all those
other causes, and many others, a fact that the mainstream media
like to conveniently "forget". She raised money for muscular
dystrophy with a one-off concert by a band called The Golden
Blades in 1995, for 9/11 victims by appearing on "The Weakest
link" in 2001 and the St. Jude's Children's Hospital by winning
Worst Cooks in 2018.

20: Tonya shares her birthday with which famous American mass

      a) Ted Bundy
      b) Charles Manson
      c) Ed Gein
      d) Jeffrey Dahmer
      e) John Wayne Gacy

20. Answer: b). In addition, there is another connection between
Tonya and Charles Manson: Margot Robbie, who played Tonya in "I,
Tonya", appeared in the Quentin Tarantino film "Once Upon A Time
in Hollywood" playing one of Manson's victims, Sharon Tate.

And finally, a bonus question:

The recent riot at the United States Capitol in Washington DC was
primarily caused by:

	a) right-wing groups such as Proud Boys and Oath Keepers
	b) left-wing groups such as Black Lives Matter and Antifa
	c) shape-shifting purple lizard people from the planet
	d) Tonyaphiles trying to distract attention from the 27th
           anniversary of The Incident

We won't give an answer for this one, but if you answered:

     a - you're a Democrat
     b - you're a Trump supporter
     c - you're Marjorie Taylor Greene.
     d - you're Christine Brennan

It is sad that we live in an era where d) is no longer the
weirdest item on the list.

And your score:

0-4 - pewter medal. Pathetic. Call yourself a Tonyaphile? You
should be able to get at least five just by guessing!

5-9 - bronze. Better, but you're still just a poseur pretending
to be a Tonyaphile. With that kind of Tonya knowledge, you should
get a job writing for the Oregonian;

10-14 - silver. Good work - you've obviously been reading "The
Portlandian" or have done your research.

15-19 - gold medal. Congratulations! I'll bet you've watched "I,
Tonya" at least 16 times.

All 20 questions - you're definitely Christine Brennan. Or Sarah
