CHAT LIVE WITH TONYA
We have just received word that Tonya will be the guest on a live
chat session hosted by "The Oregonian" on Thursday, October 7th
from noon to 12:30 PDT. The chat will include video and audio
simulcast. You can find out more at:
http://www.oregonlive.com/special/tonya.html.
To access the chat, go to:
http://www.oregonlive.com/chat
Please note that although it says noon Pacific STANDARD Time on
the Oregonian site, we presume they must mean Pacific DAYLIGHT
Time as daylight saving doesn't finish in the U.S. until later
this month. Which doesn't make any difference for Tonyaphiles in
the U.S., but makes a great deal of difference if you're in some
funny foreign time zone and tune in an hour late.
Either way, it's High Noon for Tonya.
MEDIA WATCH - MORE TONYA ARTICLES
In recent days the mainstream media have started to pick up on
this story and according to Tonya's godmother, Linda Lewis, Tonya
has been deluged with requests for interviews. Several articles
about Tonya's comeback, some of which are on-line, have appeared
in various publications. For a start there's a couple of short
Reuters articles by Laurie Nealin that include an interview with
Michael Rosenberg. They can be found at:

Note that these links may have to be pasted into your browser in
two pieces if your newsreader/e-mail software can't handle links
that spread over more than one line okay.
- John Raby of the Associated Press has also done an article,
which appeared in the San Francisco Examiner:
http://www.examiner.com/ap_s/AP_Harding_Return.html
- The local paper in Huntington, the Huntington Herald-Dispatch,
also ran a story headed "Harding To Break Ice in Huntington" a
week ago. Unfortunately it's not on line but does list some of
the other competitors:
LADIES:
Elizabeth Manley
Tonia Kwiatkowski
Pasha Grishuk (also making her pro singles debut)
Surya Bonaly
MEN:
Philippe Candeloro
Joszef Sabovcik
Alexei Urmanov
Viacheslav Zagorodniuk
Rudi Galindo

- Most recently the latest (October 7th) issue of "Newsweek"
magazine has a short mention of Tonya. This can be found at
either:

srv/issue/15_99b/printed/us/dept/nm/nm_1.htm
or
http://newsweek.com/nw-
srv/issue/15_99b/printed/int/dept/nm/nm_1.htm
The printed version apparently has a picture as well.
- Finally, the Oregonian also has two new articles on Tonya,
accessible from their first link above. These reveal a bit more
about Tonya's programs, which will be skated to "Sleeping Bag" by
ZZ Top and Avenue Blue's "Stockholm," which Tonya says both begin
"pretty and slow and build up, and they're just fun."
No Pistols, but ZZ Top's almost as good, so who can complain?
TICKET AND BROADCAST DETAILS
In the past few days we have managed to obtain more details about
ticket prices and broadcast dates.
Firstly, tickets are $US45 for the two day event, and went on
sale last Wednesday, U.S. time. The phone numbers for the
Huntington Civic Center, where the event will take place, are
(304) 696-5990 and (304) 696-4400. Indications are that tickets
are selling like hot cakes, so if you plan on attending and still
haven't got them you'd better ring up smartly. We believe that
the dates of 18th and 19th are the correct ones (the source that
said 19th & 20 appears to be wrong or out of date) and are
informed that the event starts at 7pm on both nights.
For those who aren't lucky enough to see Tonya live, it's being
broadcast on ESPN on the evenings of Oct 25, Nov 1 & Nov 8.
Viewers outside the U.S. should check their local TV listings -
out here in New Zealand it's being broadcast on the Sky Sport UHF
channel on the 31st of October at 11:45 pm.
MESSAGES TO TONYA
If you can't make it to Huntington, there is still a way you can
support Tonya in spirit if not in body. Kim White, who is one of
those involved in running the Blades of Gold Tonya site, will be
attending and plans to give Tonya copies of any messages of
support she can lay her hands on. So please make sure you leave
some on either her site (the URL is at the bottom of this issue)
or any of the other sites (including ours) which have message
facilities and they will be printed out and passed onto Tonya.
SHORTENED NAME FOR PORTICE SITE
By the way, you can now access the PortIce site by using the new
shortened URL below.
http://www.geocities.com/portice
The old one will still work just fine, so there's no need to
update links or bookmarks, but it may be a bit more memorable
(especially if you can't remember how to spell "Colosseum").
KEEPING THE PEACE - AN OPEN LETTER TO JUAN ANTONIO
His Excellency Juan Antonio Samaranch
International Olympic Committee,
Lausanne,
Switzerland.
Your Most Noble Excellency,
for some time now we have been following your career and have
noticed that you regularly speak upon the great contribution to
world peace that you see the Olympic Movement as providing.
It goes without saying that we are very heartened by your
interest in this subject, one that surely concerns all mankind.
As a result, we here at the Portland Ice Skating Society have
come up with what we believe is the perfect way in which you can
play a practical role in securing peace in one of the world's
trouble spots. We are therefore sending you a first-class, one-
way air ticket to the beautiful island paradise of East Timor
where we have arranged for you to take up a new role as a member
of the United Nations peacekeeping force currently stationed in
that territory. (We were originally thinking of Kosovo, but with
winter setting in it's getting cold over there now so we thought
that the tropics would be better for your health).
We're sure you'll love it on Timor. For a start, it's full of
heaps of thugs who like killing and beating the crap out of
innocent civilians, just like your mate General Franco and all
those Commie dictators you used to love hanging out with. Perhaps
you could even bring a few Olympic Order awards to dish out to
some of the local militia goons, seeing as how judging by alot
of the previous recipients being a murderous butcher seems to be
the main criteria for getting one.
Although we realize that your plans are to stay in your present
office of IOC leader until your term expires in 2001 (assuming,
of course, that you don't fiddle the retirement age again so you
can stay on for yet another term), we're positive that you'll
jump at this chance to convert your words into some effective
action. We've even chucked in a flak jacket for you - but we're a
bit short of weapons so we ask that you please remember to bring
some shotguns from your collection in the Olympic Museum.
We most humbly beg to remain your obedient servants,
Terry Hall
