The Portlandian, the Internet's premier source of Tonya News
November 12, 2012 Edition - ANNUAL TONYA BIRTHDAY ISSUE
(C) 2012 Portland Ice Skating Society

Yes, it's that time of year again! Tonya turns the ripe old age
of 42 today. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun?
As you will have guessed by the paucity of Tonya news this year,
our lady hasn't been up to much in the way of public activities
lately. She's obviously got her hands full with little Gordon!
Linda Lewis, Tonya's godmother & agent, tells us "Tonya is very
happy with her new life as wife and Mother! Gordon is getting
bigger everyday and is now saying a couple of words. She puts him
on the phone so he can say hi.. It takes a little coaxing, but
eventually he does say it, though mostly he likes to play with
the buttons on the phone."
Tonya continues to do commentary for TruTV's "The World's
Dumbest". Linda also informs us that Tonya has some other
projects in the works, which she can't discuss at this time.
However, we'll be the first to let you know when this stuff goes
public.
A BLAST FROM THE PAST
With not much news to report, this is obviously going to be a
fairly short issue. We do, however, have a special birthday treat
for Tonyaphiles. We have now uploaded several further issues of
"The Skater", the original Tonya fanzine that was produced by
Elaine Stamm's Portland-based fan club back in the mid '90's.
Many of these were sent to us several years ago by Joe Haran, who
was editor for most of the magazine's short lifespan, however
it's only recently that we have had the space necessary to store
these on the server in what we consider acceptable resolution,
plus some of these were photocopied by Joe from copies at the
Multnomah County Library and required a fair amount of
restoration work. We believe that nothing but the best is good
enough for our Tonya, so we'd rather take our time and do it
right.
In addition to a remastered version of August '93, we now have
the April '93, June '93 and October '93 issues available on line.
The files are in PDF format and range in size from a few hundred
kb to around 2.8 megs. There are more to come, which we hope to
have up around Christmas.

Here's a great chance to relive those pre-whack days when Tonya's
skating star was on the rise. Amongst the items of interest are a
report on Tonya's performance in the "Stars On Ice" show in
Plymouth, Mass., an announcement of Tonya's role as Grand Marshal
in the annual Troutdale parade, an upcoming speech to young
Rotarians, a performance in Sun Valley Idaho and her preparations
for Lillehammer. A Vietnam veteran tells of how seeing Tonya
skate motivated him to get his life back on track. We're also
told how Tonya designed a skating costume for a Barbie doll as a
Christmas tree ornament for a Portland charity. Hmmm, I don't
remember seeing that reported in "The Oregonian". I wonder why...
We would like to thank Joe for generously sharing these with us.
That's all this time around. Oh, and before we forget, Happy
Birthday Tonya!!!!
